ABOUT US
The Buffalo Myanmar Association (BMA) is a community organization dedicated to uniting and supporting Burmese individuals in Buffalo, New York. Our organization was founded to address the unique needs and challenges faced by those who have immigrated from Myanmar, seeking refuge from oppression and discrimination.
Myanmar, a country with a diverse population of different ethnicities and religions, has a complex political history marked by periods of authoritarian rule. Many of our members have experienced firsthand the hardships brought about by these oppressive regimes.
Despite the challenges, the people of Myanmar have shown resilience and a strong desire for democracy. From 2015 to 2020, there was a glimmer of hope as Myanmar experienced a brief period of democratic rule. However, this was short-lived, and in 2021, the military once again seized power, leading to widespread protests and human rights violations.
In response to these events, the Burmese community in Buffalo came together to form the BMA. Our mission is to foster unity among Burmese settlers, support education and employment opportunities for young Burmese Americans, and advocate for democracy in both the United States and Myanmar.
Through our work, we aim to provide a voice for the Burmese community in Buffalo and to engage with political forces and the US government on behalf of our community. We believe that by standing together, we can create a better future for all Burmese individuals, both in Buffalo and in Myanmar.
Join us in our mission to support and empower the Burmese community in Buffalo. Together, we can make a difference.
